OPTIC AnalysisOptic- An African American boy offers candy to member of presumably the Ku Klux Klan whom is also a police officer as he pulls a gun on him. In the background, a US flag rips to expose the confederate flag.
Parts- A white police officer that is also a KKK member. An African American child offers candy to someone that wants to kill him based on race. The image shows how people of color can be as compassionate and human as any white person. The US flag rips to expose the Confederate flag, a flag that is commonly represented with slavery and white supremacy. Title- "A tale of two hoodies"... the title expresses how 2 different groups of people are represented in America. Black men wearing hoodies are often perceived as dangerous while White men in the KKK aren't seen as dangerous. Interrelationships- The relationships exist between 1.) The KKK member and the boy. 2.) The US flag and the Confederate flag. 3.) the gun and the candy(sweeties). 4.) the color of the two characters skin and 5.) the hoods worn by each of the characters Conclusions- The argument the artist is trying to make in this picture is that regardless of how kind people of color may be and how equal they prove them selves to be , white supremacists and racists alike will never see them as equal simply based on the amount of melanin they have in their bodies. Additionally, the Confederate flag behind the US flag could be a symbolism for how no matter how progressive this country may be, the backbone of it is rooted deep within slavery and racism and will continue no matter what.
